Success case: DigestoCid© enhances productivity in broiler ducks | PlusVet Animal Health
The increasing pressure to reduce or eliminate the use of antibiotic growth promoters has directed poultry producers to look for alternatives. Acidifiers have demonstrated to be an effective alternative, thanks to their capacity to sanitize drinking water, reduce the pH of the intestine, and modify the composition of gut flora. In this success case, we demonstrated the positive effects of DigestoCid© on the productive parameters of Pekin ducks.

Success case: DigestoCid© enhances productivity in broiler ducks

The increasing pressure to reduce or eliminate the use of antibiotic growth promoters has directed poultry producers to look for alternatives. Acidifiers have demonstrated to be an effective alternative, thanks to their capacity to sanitize drinking water, reduce the pH of the intestine, and modify the composition of gut flora.

In this success case, we demonstrated the positive effects of DigestoCid© on the productive parameters of Pekin ducks.

Circumstances of the case

The trial took place in June 2020, in a commercial duck broiler farm.

Animals: 7,000 Pekin broiler ducks as trial group, 7,000 as control group, all the same age, 7 days-old.

Treatment: DigestoCid© was added to the drinking water of trial group, every day, for a total of 22 days, until slaughter. The control group received the normal health program of the farm.

All the other health, nutritional and management parameters, as well as the environmental conditions, were the same for both groups.

Results

Return on investment (including the cost of DigestoCid©) 2.26:1

Conclusions

The use of DigestoCid© increased survivability and average weight at slaughter while decreased feed intake and FCR. While the difference between the trial and control group in each of these parameters was not big, as all the parameters improved, the economic performance of the trial group was significantly better and the return on investment was 2.26:1.

Products of choice

DigestoCid© is indicated as an acidifier, sanitizer of drinking water and to improve intestinal health in poultry and pigs of all ages. It contains:

  • Buffered organic acids, which reduce the pH of the water and inhibit the growth of Gram-negative bacteria.
  • Monoester fatty acids, also called medium chain fatty acids, which inhibit the growth of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria. In addition, they have antiviral effects.
  • Essential oils and phytochemicals with antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and antioxidant properties.

DigestoCid© has a broader spectrum of action than products based solely on organic acids, allowing superior antibacterial and antifungal efficacy at a less acidic pH (5.5-6.5).
