Advantages of phytogenics over other categories of feed additives | PlusVet Animal Health
When they began to be used on commercial farms, their mechanism of action was poorly understood, which in some cases made it difficult for nutritionists to include phytogenics in their feeds. But, in recent years, research work has multiplied, which has uncovered that the action of phytogenics as AGP replacers is complex and multifunctional, and this complexity represents an advantage over other types of feed additives.

Advantages of phytogenics over other categories of feed additives

Since antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) were banned in Europe in 2006, phytogenics have emerged as an effective alternative and their use is becoming widespread.

When they began to be used on commercial farms, their mechanisms of action were poorly understood, which in some cases made it difficult for nutritionists to include phytogenics in their feeds. But, in recent years, research work has multiplied, it has uncovered that the action of phytogenics as AGP replacers is complex and multifunctional, and that this complexity represents an advantage over other types of feed additives.

Investigations have shown that phytogenics have the following mechanisms of action:

  • At the right doses, phytogenics stimulate feed intake.
  • Phytogenics boost weight gain and general performance.
  • They are beneficial for liver health.
  • Antioxidant phytogenics improve meat and egg quality.
  • Phytogenics exert positive effects on the three aspects of gut health:
    • Improve the status of digestive tissues, thanks to their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory affects. Furthermore, they stimulate endogenous secretions, which enhances digestibility of nutrients, especially proteins.
    • Balance the microbiota, thanks to their prebiotic and antimicrobial activities.
    • Strengthen the gut barrier function.

There is no other category of feed additives in the market that shows such a wide range of beneficial actions.

When designing antibiotic-free feeds, nutritionists are not merely looking for a feed additive to replace AGPs, but they are expecting to find a complete solution that keeps animals productive and healthy despite the daily challenges. Phytogenics, with their complex mechanism of action, are effective against digestive diseases of infectious and non-infectious origin, as well as in cases of stress and poor productivity and to promote general growth. For these reasons, phytogenics are the best and most complete solution to produce antibiotic-free feeds.
