10 Sep Success case: Relieving oral ulcers in layers with PlusProtect Digestive© and PlusBind Bio©
In April 2019, a test in a leading layer farm showed that the administration of PlusProtect Digestive© and PlusBind Bio© was effective to end the problem of oral ulcers.
Circumstances of the case
The experimental animals were 104,000 layers located in two houses.
Before the test
Before the test, approximately 70% of layers showed oral ulcers. As we explained in this article, T2-toxin and diacetoxyscirpenol are the main mycotoxins involved in the lesions in mouth and beak.
In our laboratory, we carried out a mycotoxin determination on several feed samples.
While the levels of T2-toxin did not exceed the recommended levels, the contamination by fumonisins was almost 7 folds above the safety limits. It is well known that there is an additive effect when fumonisins and T2 toxin are found together in the same feed.
Health program
PlusBind Bio© was mixed in feed and PlusProtect Digestive© was added to drinking water. The program lasted for 10 days.
After the test
During the test period, the color of the oral ulcers became progressively lighter, the area of the lesions became smaller and the lesions gradually disappeared in all the affected hens.
Conclusion
The combination of PlusProtect Digestive© and PlusBind Bio© successfully treated the oral ulcers.
